FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES

We support children and their families through approaches that are holistic, child-centred, and grounded in understanding. Our work focuses on supporting children to express themselves through play, while supporting parents in making sense of their child’s emotional world.

PLAY THERAPY

We know that play is essential for children to develop physically, emotionally and socially. Play fosters imagination and creativity and encourages confidence and concentration.

Play Therapy (or Special Time as it is referred to with the children) is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy whereby the child’s natural means of expression, play, is used as a therapeutic method to assist him/her in coping with emotional stress or trauma. Using play, rather than relying on ‘talk’ allows the child to manipulate the world on a smaller scale, something that cannot be done in the child’s everyday environment.

Play Therapy is suitable for children aged 4 – 12 years old (or developmentally equivalent).

Why has my child been referred for Special Time?

If you or your child’s teacher has identified that your child may benefit from the one-to-one support, Play Therapy can help children who are experiencing a wide variety of difficulties including:

What will happen in my child's Play Therapy sessions?

Your child’s Play Therapist will have a large selection of play materials from which your child may choose. These may include art and craft materials, dressing up props, sand and water, clay, small figures and animals, musical instruments, puppets and books. The Play Therapist will enable your child to use these resources to express him or herself without having to provide verbal explanations.

PARENT (FILIAL PLAY) COACHING

Parent (Filial Play) Coaching is a research-based approach in guiding parents to support their child/children at home. This program aims to provide parents with the skills and techniques tailored to the parents’ needs that can be implemented at home through play. The coach will work on skills with parents on a weekly basis and ask parents to set up play sessions with their child 10 minutes a day to work on such skills.

The coaching is parent-led as we believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ for parenting.

Parents that may benefit from filial coaching are parents of children from 0 – 18 years who feel that they are facing difficulties with their child’s emotional regulation, behaviours and/ or their connection with parents.

Parents of children under 4 years old where the child has experienced a difficult situation such as loss/bereavement, emotional dysregulation, separation anxiety are encouraged to join Parent (Filial Play) Coaching rather than Play Therapy.
